Feng Shui Enhancements Using Color Therapy

Every day we make choices based on color, some being of more importance than others. The colored traffic light tells us to stop or safely go. We stand in front of closets asking the age-old question: What am I going to wear today? If we are tired, we may subconsciously choose red for energy. Need some nurturing? Perhaps you will be drawn to green.

Other than a choice point in life, however, what exactly is color? A free online dictionary tells us that color is 'the appearance of objects (or light sources) described in terms of a person's perception of their hue and lightness (or brightness) and saturation of objects.' That is a bit of a mouthful. More simply put, color is the way our brain interprets the frequency of light.

The way color is perceived and experienced is largely based on our cultural background. Colors give off vibrations and different people react differently to those vibrations. They can either give us a boost or drag us down.

From a feng shui perspective, colors used in our living space affect us physically, emotionally and psychologically. Feng shui is about how a person interacts with his or her environment. It teaches us to tune in and learn how to sense the energy of a space.

The balance of yin and yang, which is the concept of interconnected opposites that complement and complete one another, is an important aspect of feng shui. There are cool colors that represent yin energy (heaven/female/passive) and warm colors that represent yang energy (earth/male/active). Through the analysis and use of color, we can achieve the feng shui goal of yin/yang balance in our homes.

Studies indicate that, generally speaking, certain colors bring out particular emotions that affect our bodies, moods and energy levels. The following information outlines generalized psychological effects and offers suggestions on how to use color.

Red - Yang

Attracts attention and invites action; too much can agitate or anger. If you need inspiration, bring in some fiery red to get things going. To spark romance, add touches to a master bedroom. Be careful not to overdo it, though, since the bedroom is a place for yin energy as we rest and rejuvenate. Red is very active yang and too much can easily burn out a relationship or cause anxiety. By choosing subdued shades such as pink, rose, peach or taupe, you will effectively bring in softer, yet romantic energies.

Yellow - Yang

Cheerful and optimistic; imbalanced it can make one feel anxious or tired. The color of sunlight, it evokes feelings of joy and warmth. Reportedly, the effect of yellow on the brain results in the release of more serotonin, the feel good hormone. A soft shade in the kitchen will start the day off with cheerfulness. Yellow, a milder yang than red, brings in mental energy and clarity. It represents health and vitality and is effective in a family/living room to stimulate conversation.

White - Yang

Signifies cleanliness and order; however, can be straining on the eye or unfriendly. Like yellow, white yang energy is good for kitchens where it serves as a perfect pallet to enhance the appeal of food. Because it represents cleanliness, it works well in bathrooms. Use in areas where focus and creativity is needed.

Brown/Beige - Yang

Suggests stability; excess can result in resistance to change. Balanced browns make us feel rooted and grounded. Taupe, beige or tan shades in main living spaces bring in feelings of safety and security and will encourage family interaction.

Blue - Yin

Stimulates self-exploration and serenity. Decreases appetite, slows the heartbeat and lowers blood pressure. Too much blue can be depressing or cause apathy. An excellent color for a foyer or meditation room. Due to its tendency to inspire contemplation, it is not recommended for a master bedroom where it might cause alienation in partnerships. Excellent for kitchen accents when dieting. Good choice for bathrooms.

Green - Yin

New beginnings; stimulates learning. Disproportion can lead to distraction. Green is the ideal way to bring nature into our homes and connect to the outside world. Representing growth, it is suggested for a home office or child's bedroom to help with studying. Like blue, consider green for bathrooms.

Black - Yin

Inspires intrigue; the extreme yin of black adds mystery to a space. It should be used sparingly, as it can slow down activity or be draining. A great choice for accent pieces.

Purple - Yin

Spirituality and creativity. Has a strong vibration and works best in moderation as it can result in pretentiousness or fatigue. Use in conjunction with red to symbolize wealth.

Personal Choices

The psychological effects noted above may not apply to everyone. Our response to color is very personal and, therefore, subjective. It is important that you reflect on your individual responses. Embrace the power of feng shui and become more aware of your surroundings. Choose color schemes that support your individual energy and goals, and create a nourishing space that feels balanced, inviting and safe.

Many of the principles of Feng Shui are inherently within the sustainable building movement: namely, treading lightly on the Earth and using her resources wisely. However, there is a significant part of Feng Shui that is often missing from typical green designs. This wisdom can be integrated into sustainable-design practices to enrich human beings through better physical and psychological health.

Why You Should Care?

Feng Shui affects you every moment of your life, whether you realize it or not. The Feng Shui of your home, your workplace, your dentist's office, your child's school, and your local Motor Vehicle office impact the quality of your energy and how you experience life in those places.

The principles of Feng Shui state that you are always under the influence of universal energies, or chi. The Chinese describe energies as being yin (passive) or yang (active). For harmony to exist, and therefore, health and well-being, the energies need to be in balance. Negative chi, or energy that is out of balance, contributes to stress, depression, and illness. Negative chi can affect you consciously-such as the stress of being in a traffic jam on the way home from work-or subconsciously-such as the stress you will experience as you sit with your back to the office door. This form of subconscious stress grows and accumulates throughout your day. A poorly laid out office plan with sharp angles, a darkly lit entrance to your home, and clutter piled up in your foyer will add stress subconsciously and, with repeated exposure, can lead to depression and illness.

The World Health Organization cites stress as a global epidemic. "Chronic . . . (stress) is potentially very destructive and can deprive people of physical and mental health, and at times, even of life itself," wrote Cyralene P. Bryce in Stress Management in Disasters (Pan American Organization). According to the International Feng Shui Guild, this practice seeks to reduce stress in the environment by designing spaces that prioritize the health of humans and our absolute need for nature and balance.

What is Feng Shui?

Thousands of years ago, ancient people lived in harmony with their environment. Feng Shui, and other similar cultural philosophies around the world, was practiced intuitively and enriched the lives of the people.

Using the natural movement of chi, the polarities of yin and yang, the five Chinese elements, and the Bagua (a map based on astronomy and calendars), its principles can create a more holistic space that nurtures physical and psychological health and well-being.

It is the ancient equivalent to environmental psychology. It focuses on the interplay between humans and their surroundings. In the realm of brain functionality, our modern minds are overwhelmed with left-brain activities: logic, conscious, and linear thinking. Feng Shui works on a right-brain level: simultaneous, intuitive, and subconscious. Because of this, it is considered more of an art than a science and, in order to practice Feng Shui, one needs to exercise the right-brain functions. Meditation and yoga are great ways to accomplish this.

This ancient principle incorporates principles of nature: proportions, flow of chi, and color relationships. When placed within a symmetrically shaped building, people inherently feel more comfortable. Some ratio examples are the Golden Rectangle, credited to Leonardo de Vinci, and the Golden Mean, a beautiful pattern of spirals which nature gloriously displays in flowers, seashells, and even the human body.

There are no straight lines in nature. Light waves and water currents move in curves. Energy moves in curves. People do not naturally walk in a straight line. An interesting study on a college campus observed the walking patterns of students and faculty after a snowstorm. Instead of following the straight walkways, they meandered through the campus, as a stream meanders through a landscape. Curves are much more natural and, therefore, make us feel more comfortable.

The colors used in our interior spaces are most comfortable when they mimic the natural environment. Darker floors echo the forest floor, medium colors for walls mimic buildings and distant landscapes, and light-colored ceilings represent the sky.

I've Got a House with a Missing Wealth Area!

Often, clients and people say to me "I have this or that in my house. It's awful! I should do something about it, right?" They say that some feature in their home is bad Feng Shui, according to a book they've read. What I tell them is this: Feng Shui is a tool to empower us, not judge us. It's a tool to help us be in the light, feel comfort, safety, and peace, and be in balance. There is no such thing as "bad Feng Shui" (although my son will claim that I use those words when his bedroom is a mess). Feng Shui is not supposed to make us feel like we are missing something, or that what we have isn't right.

There are few rules in Feng Shui. What is good for some may be not great for others, and vice versa. A house that has many levels may be very trying for someone who has difficulty with ambition, decision-making, and self-confidence. For others this house might be a great environment.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when looking at your space: Who resides here? Who works here? What is the quality of their energy? What is the primary purpose of the space? What type of energy is best for this space? Is it working for us, or not? It is an art as well as a science, so it's flexible and intuitive. There are no lists of rules, black and white. It's all relative.

The most important thing to realize is how you feel in a space. Although that sounds easy to ascertain, it's not as easy as you think. You need to relax and quiet yourself. Reflect on how you feel whenever you walk into that space. Imagine that you are there. Are you upset, stressed, tired, hungry, confused, happy, at peace? This is what Feng Shui is all about: getting down to feelings.

Still, it's very difficult to be objective. A consultant rarely does his or her own Feng Shui. It's difficult to see through fresh eyes.

If you are like many people, you are probably stressed much of the time. I can't underscore how important it is for people now, more than ever, to have their home and workspace reviewed and brought into alignment with their energy.

So . . . "Beyond Green?"

Feng Shui is the original "green living and design" movement. Nowadays, these new disciplines of green building and sustainable design are concerned primarily with the Earth, energy efficiency, and water management. The principles create a more holistic approach by bringing in the concept of the human element and psychological well-being. Whether they're newly constructed LEED-certified or Energy Star buildings or existing structures, the lives of those who reside and work in them can be enhanced by incorporating these ancient principles.

Some architects understand the power of Feng Shui. Some have become certified, while others work with consultants on their designs. From health-care facilities to office parks and residences, Feng Shui is enhancing the lives of people in the West at a rate greater than ever before. It's vital that this "green" movement not only continues to grow into the mainstream, but that Feng Shui principles are integrated to create healthy buildings in every sense of the word.

Yet using too much of a bright color can have an opposite effect by creating tension or anxiety. And using colors that are too dark can depress the atmosphere. Try and look at it objectively, like a painting, and stand at the doorway to the room. Try to look with fresh eyes, and be honest with yourself about your color choice. If it is coming across too strong, do not hesitate to lighten it up, or add neutral color accents or accessories to the room to soften it.

The two concepts are compatible, says Cheryl Amantea, chair of both the Advertising and Fashion & Retail Management degree programs at The New England Institute of Art in Boston. “Feng Shui incorporates plants, sunlight, cleanliness and the elements of running water and circulation of air, so it's not a stretch to put the 'green lifestyle' in with Feng Shui.”

“Feng Shui (pronounced fung sch-way) means ‘wind water.’ It connects what is seen (environment) with what is unseen (energy) - often referred to as chi (pronounced chee),” says Amantea.

Chi can be found in your color scheme and placement of objects, with each color symbolizing different characteristics. Aptly enough, green symbolizes life, growth, vitality and energy. Yellow and earth tones represent health, while blue is symbolic of knowledge and red is used for power.

Placement is key to creating a positive chi. “Picture your home as an octagon,” says Amantea. Find the true front door of your home and, according to Interior Design student Adam Neidlinger at The Art Institute of Indianapolis, ensure air and energy are moving in a steady nurturing manner.

“The flow of the energy or chi through a space can be increased or decreased by the objects being placed in the room,” says Neidlinger. “Wouldn’t you rather get energy from a natural, sustainable, green object than from a manufactured, most likely chemical-filled object?”

Bamboo is a great element because it is natural, clean and it quickly regenerates itself. Live plants are also important, according to Neidlinger. “Plants renew the air, which is what carries the energy in a room.”

LEED-accredited architect and engineer Samuel Hurt, who instructs at The Art Institute of Indianapolis, agrees with Amantea, but is not exactly sold on Feng Shui as green living. “Personally I’m a bit skeptical about Feng Shui and some of the claims, but that doesn’t mean it is a completely useless way to clean up the environment,” says Hurt.

Through his teaching of sustainable design and his renowned, sustainable work on buildings in the Midwest, Hurt has become well-versed in the green movement. He believes that if Feng Shui wants to combine with sustainable design, however it is defined, we are all better off.

“If Feng Shui can assist in reducing contamination in the world, then that is fine. And good for anyone else who can advance the same cause, no matter what the particular path may be,” says Hurt.
